The Need

The US Bureau of Justice Statistics found that violent crime rates had fallen by 43.4% from 1998 to 2007; similarly, property crime rates had fallen for the same time period by 32.6%. Despite these falling crime rates, the U.S. prison population actually grew at an alarming rate, from 744,000 inmates in 1985 to more than 2.3 million in 2007, an increase of 309%. State correctional budgets increased in the last twenty years by 315%, from $10.6 billion in 1987 to $44.06 billion in 2007.

Increased recidivism rates are costing American taxpayers more money and significantly impacting statebudgets. Of nearly 697,000 inmates admitted into state prisons in 2007, 35.7% of them were parole violators and 51.8% had previously been in prison. The rate of growth for returned offenders far out paces the rate of new perpetrators.

So what is the solution to this issue that has woven itself into the very social, ethical and ethnic fabric of our society? Many think that advocating for changes in policy is the answer. While this may help, it is important to not lose sight of the fact that successful integration of ‘returning citizens’ on an individual basis is the only thing that will change statistics. This is why Genesis in Milwaukee exists.

Our Mission

The Mission of Genesis in Milwaukee is to facilitate successful integration of citizens returning to communities from correctional facilities, thereby increasing public safety and decreasing recidivism.

Our Services

Genesis offers a comprehensive, individualized program that assists with housing, employment, furthering education, financial literacy and enhanced family relationships. Each Genesis participant is paired with a mentor who serves as a life coach for the returning citizen. There are many needs that need to be addressed when an individual is released from prison to assist in creating and providing an environment for a successful transition back into society.

Program Focus Areas

In-Prison Mentorship

The program starts with In-Prison mentorship six to twelve months before a mentee is released. Mentors develop a strong relationship with the inmate and do an extensive evaluation of their needs before release.

Post-Release Mentoring

Post-Release mentoring provides immediate support and guidance when a man is released and coordinates programs designed to meet the many needs of men re-entering the community. There is a strong focus on emotional support and physical needs.

Employment Training and Placement

Employment mentoring involves placement in job training services through our network partners. Participants are mentored in job readiness and job retention as well as skills and interests assessment, money management and career development.

Life Skills Training

Life skills training is available for all program participants and can be modified to address individual needssuch as anger management, Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) issues, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem and fatherhood training.

Community Integration

Mentees move to independence and focus on giving back to the community through service and volunteerwork. This is a time of discovery and personal gratification using their talents and skills to help others.
